This review is from: A Farewell to Arms: The Hemingway Library Edition (Kindle Edition)
This is a most excellent Edition of a classic. The "value added" is the including of Forewards
by Patrick and Sean, Hemingway's sons, and the addition of the "Alternative Endings" and
"Beginnings" which Ernest Hemingway considered in his writing of Farewell. Patrick points to
what he considers the most important aspect of this Edition, the aspect of Erwin Schrodinger.
So, what does Patrick mean? Erwin Schrodinger was a physicist, famous for his Live/Dead
Cat mind experiment, in which the cat, before observation, is both dead and alive...a quick
course in quantum physics. This unknowing position is called a Superposition, and Farewell's
Catherine lived in that state until Hemingway could decide among some forty-seven alternative
endings...! In World War 1, Schrodinger served on the Austrian side, and Hemingway the Italian
side on this front of the war. Both died in 1961. Both received the Nobel Prize, Schrodinger for
physics, and Hemingway for literature. A quantum friendship..?
