Thanks, Robin!! Charlie
Dear Lovers of Life & Poetry,
I trust by now most of you’ve heard that our Beloved Mary Oliver died January 17, 2019 of lymphoma. Mary was an unapologetic, life-long smoker, (as was Molly), and Mary lived through lung cancer in 2012, but it was a matter of time. She was 83, and died at her home in Hobe Sound, Florida, another place, besides Provincetown, that she dearly loved.
As I am slowly recovering from the magnitude of knee replacement surgery, and not up to all my usual pursuits and passions, I am more than ever reminded that each day Mary urged us to do whatever we can to “build the universe.”
To honor all the Beauty, Joy, and Inspired Word & Heart Mary has given us over the long decades of her Poet-Life, may we continue to do, in our own ways, no less.
With gentle compassion to us All, for we have lost a Great Soul & Source of Nourishment. xoxox Robin
SONG OF THE BUILDERS
On a summer morning
I sat down
on a hillside
to think about God—
a worthy pastime.
Near me, I saw
a single cricket;
it was moving the grains of the hillside
this way and that way.
How great was its energy,
how humble its effort.
Let us hope
it will always be like this,
each of us going on
in our inexplicable ways
building the universe.
